Google will be updating the Chrome icon on their popular browser and I have mixed feelings towards it. It seems they’re moving away from that shiny, Chrome sphere and onto something a little more — flat. The styling is very similar to the design of the new stickers we’ve been seeing come bundled with the CR-48 Chrome Netbook. Google compares the new icon directly to the simplicity, cleanliness and general ease of use of their browser.
Minimal has been all the rage these days and I’ve noticed Google moving more towards that direction with the UI on the newest version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Other big companies aren’t immune to the minimal fever either. Microsoft recently changed the design of their browser and mobile platform with the all new Internet Explorer 9 and Windows Phone 7 OS.
Although I can appreciate different design choices, I have taken a stand against minimal. I like my icons in their glossy, messy, 3D-ish mechanized glory and, I for one, will miss that rainbow colored Pokeball.
