For me, it's a complete showstopper that Chrome shares the proxy settings with IE-- that is, you can't change the settings for one without changing it for the other. So for now, I'll have to stick to Firefox. I use a proxyfilter that is very aggressive on my "primary" browser. IE on the other hand, is set for maxium compatibility so that when I really need full IE functionality with all the bells and whistles enabled, I can use it-- and therefore it does not go through the proxy. Firefox has it's own proxy settings which is exactly how I need it in order to implement this. I guess I could write a wrapper program to do the config switch, but that's confusing and means I can't use both browsers at the same time.
I'll give Chrome another look if they see fit to isolate its proxy settings.
