I know Chrome has it's own version on this that posts up your most recently viewed websites but it's just not the same

I definitely agree, I don't really want or need a "top visited" section for my blank new tab pages, I wanna see the dozen sites I prefer to.

Anybody know about a plugin/add-on or whatever like this being developed or anything?

Yes, a lot of people are actually still on Firefox because Chrome hasn't Fast Dial despite to be faster.
