Not that there's much of a difference between those last two, right? Not sure where this thread fits, since its a bit of everything, so i'll leave it up to the mods to decide if it belongs somewhere else.
Ok, as of November i switched from OS X to W7 because i needed a laptop, and didn't have much of a budget. Because i'm on Windows, that means that i can use Chrome, and i started playing with it a month or so. While i do like it, there are some issues that keep me from fully adoption it.
What's write? Integrating the search and URL bars, very nice. Minimizing the status bar, this i like. Also the speed, and cleanliness of the design.
But, the devil is in the details as they say. In and of itself, the small number of extensions isn't a bad thing, except that the few things i use on Firefox aren't available over here for the most part, or in poor copies of what i have there, or at least i haven't found the real ones yet.
I like having a bookmarks bar, but i would like to remove the 'Other bookmarks' folder from the end of it, i can get an extension that accesses that from the address bar, and i want the space it takes for other bookmarks.
Ads are a problem, on Firefox, i use the built in pop up blocker, and AdBlock, and basically all ads are gone, there's so little left that its not even worth worrying about. Sadly that's not the case with Chrome, i'm seeing a lot more ads in the same set up including NetFlix pop unders (or are those pop overs? They're opening as tabs here), is there something i might've forgotten to set, or something i can add to fix this?
I miss Morning Coffee, Today's Links is just a pale imitation, although using a page to interact with its settings is nice, MC's interface is just too crammed into a small space. I'd like to see something similar with a easier way to add pages, and perhaps features MC doesn't have like setting a site for once weekly or once monthly, or multiple sets of book marks based on time of day.
On that note, i miss TabKit, having multiple rows of tabs, rather than crushing them into a mess of indistinguishable tabs is nice, especially when you open some three dozen plus tabs at once using Today's Links.
I miss the AvantGarde theme i use over there, and its insane level of detail. The cork board them i'm using here is nice enough, but it doesn't customize anything more than the background, whereas AvantGarde changes the buttons, icons (even in the right click menus), basically everything to give it a nice uniform theme. There's no uniformity problem here, its just that the stock buttons are rather boring.
Final judgement? Almost good enough for everyday use, and even if it isn't, with the number of hangs and crashes that FireFox has developed lately, good enough might be enough. Anyone have any suggestions for fixing these few problems, or how to make it better for a casual web surfer?
