thank's for your help but I give up. no matter what I do. chromium crashes.

well you could also use chromium theme maker and Import a theme, click no while editing a chrome theme and save it which could solve the problem.

What I wrote above does not work. And btw Chrome themes are compatible with Chromium, trust me, I just tested it 2 days ago. I tried/used Chromium v1.0.154.42 to test themes on.

But that is not exactly the latest version...

When I first asked the question I used v1.0.155.0 and since then chromium is up to v2.0.157.0(7859) which is the version I'm using now.

what has that to do with anything?!? it certainly has nothing to do with if it's possible to adapt the posted custom themes to the newer versions of chromium

yes it does. cuz some versions might no longer allow themes.

This theme updater does not work for newer theme files(2.0.174.0)
I made a workaround, but it's messy; see it at Papercut
I also made a theme pack, in case anyone wants ready made solution for the new version
