    Default Browser lockup poll

So, some users have been reporting that Chrome/Chromium has been hanging/crash/slowing down on them. I'd just like to take a poll to see if there is any correlation between the number of cores and the slowdown of Chrome.

I've listed my temporary stop-gap solution to Chrome hanging in this thread, as well as my line of thought as time went on.

    What do you guys think?

Single athlon 3400, never hung, on both laptop and desktop (both have same cpu) and both under xp sp3 home, I dual boot linux but have not gone down the wine/chromium route yet. No idea if this will help but I do have similar setup regime with regards settings .. have a look at page 2 of the following.

Maybe a stab in the dark but you never know, the problem doesn't seem to have much in the way of common factors (different variations of SWF based attacks causing lack of consistent symptoms?). I believe my suggestion is not very well known at all (ask around how many people know how to change adobe flash settings) and I know both my machines have never had the problem.

Edit: Bookmark sites you always have problems with, try my tips and then go back there.

If it is malware related I recommend giving your system a good scan with the following (NB the site is sometimes overtaxed by users, you may need to retry, and after installation let it update before a scan) http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and if it finds anything hit the remove button and follow instructions (it may have to restart your computer to enable itself to clean out permission/in use locked files).

I doubt that it is an SWF based attack, though it is clear that it has something to do with flash. The site I'm using to test right now is www.lifehacker.com, but from what I've seen so far, all the sites in the Gawker Media Network seem to be affected.

Oh, and it's not virus, not malware. If you read the thread I linked to in my first post, I stated it quite clearly.

But from the (very) small sample of votes we have here, it appears that people with two or more cores have no problems with chrome going nuts.

Yes I read your post, if you refer to this which your link directs me to...

"Okay, it's not the phishing and malware protection, DNS pre-fetching and it's not anti-virus software. I know because I've tried disabling the P&M protection/DNS pre-fetch, and the problem was around before I installed AV software (just started using the comp)."

I see nothing there to prove categorically it is not a virus or malware for everyone who is experiencing the problem. In fact if the problem was around before you installed AV software, and you disabled further protection within chrome (such as it is), then your 'statement' declaring it not a virus, not malware, to be honest is at least suspect.

To disprove all avenues and help you track down the culprit my post was merely a suggestion to all who participate in eliminating possibilities. And not in any way directed at yourself. Good luck helping to find and resolve it though

I mentioned in the post that the problem disappeared (completely) when Flash was uninstalled. I also mentioned that I had only just started using the computer (fresh install). Anyone with decent computer competency should, for the most part, be able to use a computer for extended periods of time without AV software and not contract computer viruses. I'm not condoning using a computer without AV software, just saying that it can be done easily, with common sense. Most spyware and viruses are from silly email attachments and blindly clicking Yes whenever a popup comes along.

Of course, I have run done a thorough scan of the computer with AV and anti-spyware. It would be foolish of me to state that it is not a virus or malware otherwise (and it isn't). I've used Avast for AV, and Spybot for spyware. Both have updated virus/spyware definitions.
