    Default Google search engine

just realised that it is not possible to edit Google's search engine while it is possible to change the url of the others; hard coded into Chrome I suppose

You can disable the original one and create a new one yourself.

    1. Go to the Search Engine Editor
    2. Select Google (Default) and click Edit
    3. Change the name and keyword to something else (ie OLD Google) and hit OK
    4. Click on Add
    5. Create a new engine called Google with Keyword as google.com or goog or whatever.
    6. Set the URL for the new one to http://www.google.com/search?q=%s
    7. Set this new one to default
